What Will Be Different Post 2012? Part 2: The Real Economy

This may be the single most important post I’ve ever written, and you’ve ever read.

The current message from the media when it comes to your personal finance decisions goes something like this:

1. Start saving money now to send your kids to college.

2. Pay off your debt as quickly as possible. (And don’t acquire any if at all possible, unless it’s to buy a  house or car, and even then, pay it off as quickly as possible.)

3. Prepare for retirement by saving as much money as you can and investing it in mutual funds or maybe put it into an insurance product that will pay you tax-free in your later years.

Do I really want to keep focusing on saving you money on your taxes?

I’ve invested HOURS planning for my tax-savings call tomorrow.

And I’ve got to be honest, I’m definitely questioning where this insistence I have on staying focused here comes from. Do I REALLY care MOST about helping you save money on your taxes? Is this really the highest value I can be bringing you in the world?

Yes, it’s important.  Yes, I’m very well suited to talk to you about tax stuff in a way you can digest, act on and implement. And I do have a knack for making this kind of stuff feel yummy.  But, is it keeping me from my Zone of Genius?  Or am I here?

How to Make Money with Information Products

So, you want to make money with information products?  Of course you do!  If you read about information products from the internet marketing gurus who are aching to lure you in, turning your knowledge into information products will give you:

  • passive income
  • a lifestyle business
  • the possibility of being location independent (living anywhere or traveling for long stretches)
  • even fame and fortune if you are really lucky

While all that could be true, there is a lot they aren’t telling you, of course.

I got my ass handed to me …

When I first started out in business, I opened my own law practice.

That was back in 2003 and, ironically, I knew nothing about the legal aspects of business

Even worse, I thought that legal stuff really didn’t apply to MY teeny, tiny, micro business. I thought it was only for the big companies.

And, I thought that if I paid too much attention to the legal side of things, I would just be asking for trouble — you know all that law of attraction stuff, you get what you think about.

Plus, I trusted everyone I worked with to do the right thing — figuring I wouldn’t work with them otherwise. Know what I mean?

Well, the Universe has a way of throwing our blind spots right in our faces, doesn’t it?

I got my ass handed to me again and again to show me where I was wrong about not needing to have my legal act together when it came to my business.

Fortunately, I wised up before I lost it all and made the choice to learn everything I could about what we really do need when it comes to legal, insurance, financial and tax systems even for those of us who have teeny, tiny, itsy, bitsy micro businesses.

And I wasn’t about to make my decisions from a place of worry, doubt or fear.

So I opened my eyes, did the hard work, and found out.

Now, I’m sharing what I learned with you so you do not have to go through the mess I did, so you can stop making decisions about legal, insurance, financial and tax matters for your business from a place of worry, doubt and fear.

I’m hosting a live webinar (I rarely do these anymore so you are in for a treat) with my good friend George Kao (and to get both of us is an even bigger treat) and you are invited.

I’m going to let you in on all the gory details and also help you see how very easy it can be to make your legal, insurance, financial and tax decisions from an empowered place.

So join me and George. Here’s where ya do it:

And please, after you register, be sure to type in any questions you have about making legal, insurance, financial and tax decisions in your business so I can answer them live on the webinar.

Or ask them here in the comments.  This one’s for you.

Where in the Universe is Alexis Neely today?

The online world is funny. Stop posting on your blog, sending out your newsletter, tweeting or Facebooking regularly and it can seem to your online friends as if you’ve disappeared, especially if they are only used to communicating with you in just one of those forums.

It goes to show you how important it is to maintain an online presence if you are doing business online.  And, it’s also important to get out of a rut every now and then, as my friends Gaby and Raj coach themselves and their clients – Stop, Shift and Start.

Why I Do It In Public …

I’ve lived so much of my life publicly, right here, on the internet show I hosted for 3 seasons, on Facebook & on Twitter.  I’ve shared about things other people would never be willing to let you see publicly.  Why? Because I believe that part of my Great Work is to let you in on all of it — so that you can see what it really takes to have an integrated life and business.

Screw the false marketing facade.  I want you to really know.

I also believe the oft-quoted saying “we are only as sick as our secrets.”

The Single Most Valuable Asset of Your Business, Bar None

Without a doubt, no matter what business you are in, the single most valuable asset of your business is the list of people you maintain contact with on a regular basis, at least by email, and possibly by mail as well.

If you do not have a list, the time to start building your list is now.  And that does not mean gathering the email addresses of everyone you know in Outlook and sending out mass emails using your bcc: function.

Incubators, Pregnancy and Partners … Evolving Into a New Paradigm of Business

I spent last week in Boulder at the Integral Incubator with Craig and 30 or so other integral focused folks incubating the next phase of their own evolution.

I emerged from the incubator pregnant with possibility, hope and a new project.

I’ll tell you more about the project here as time permits, but for now I want to focus on a couple of other things … 1) my new partner(!!!) (we are in a 3-month trial partnership while we engage in the agreement process) and 2) why you probably won’t see me as the sole owner of anything going forward.
