Why All Business Owners Benefit From Spiritual Work

rainbow Since I launched my own business nearly 6 years ago, I’ve done a huge amount of spiritual/personal growth/personal development work. Aside from my kids, my business has been the greatest driver of my growth.

All business owners would benefit from serious personal spiritual work. Why?

Because the single most important factor when it comes to your business success is believing in yourself (self-confidence) and accepting yourself for who you truly are (self-acceptance) and those only come with some serious spiritual backing.

Without growth work, self-confidence is often a masquerade of the ego. Self-acceptance a charade.

While I was financially and apparently successful before I embarked on my spiritual journey, I operated in a nearly perpetual state of fear and anxiety. It all depended on me and I was constantly afraid of dropping a ball. The weight of the world was on my shoulders.

Today, thanks to my spiritual work, I know something far bigger than me has got my back and no matter what I’m always taken care of.

I can rely on my true Self to always ensure my needs are met and to provide me with real security that comes from knowing I’ll never let myself down. Not to say I won’t fail. I’ve done that (and will continue to do that) a lot. But, I’ll always get right back up and try again because I have the faith of knowing my life is about something bigger.

I’ve been writing a book in my head about business as a path to spiritual growth. (My background is spiritual formation.)

There are so many ways that business grows us spiritually. We need to focus on our clients, serve their best interests first, listen deeply, add value, serve — plus know our own worth, set boundaries, give from strength, and focus on the mission given to us by God, and abide in connection with God for his clear leading and empowering, to accomplish “God only” things in the world through our businesses.

It’s amazing what happens to women when they tap into the courage sourced in God’s Spirit to offer their strengths and goodness to the world, and be paid well for it. That payment starts with money, to make the valuation concrete, but then we progress to preferring other forms of valuation.

Business is a holy activity done by God’s design and an active path to personal growth.

You are absolutely right, Alexis! I love how you have expressed this. It’s been my experience too — opening up to my spiritual side (which I didn’t know I had before) has brought me so much joy. Embracing that part of me has allowed me to take my brain off the hook of having to have all the answers and open up to experiences and answers that are far beyond what I ever could have imagined as possible. Great article but I must point out something. In the end you said:

This kind of contradicts what I thought was your main point. You said “self-confidence is often a masquerade of the ego. Self-acceptance a charade.”

Relying on your true self to make sure your own needs are met? That’s a lot of self-confidence isn’t it? What is your true self anyway? I’m a believer that much of what we might consider “truth” is actually a lie. For example, what if YOUR truth is that you are inadequate? But that’s not the truth at all, yet you believe it.

My point: I liked were you were going with it but you brought it back to self. It’s not about you. From a spiritual perspective, it is knowing that we are adequate, not because of what we do but because God intends us to be adequate and he is willing to help us. But we have to be willing to let him participate in our lives and get out of self reliance. God will move other people to do marvelous things in our lives as we move to do marvelous things for others.

This is a GREAT point Bo. I believe that each of us has a big Self and a small self within us and most of us are completely unaware of our big Self and operate completely from our small self. I believe my true Self is that eternal self that is never born and never dies and when I’m connected to source energy guides everything I do. Through my spiritual work, I’ve been able to connect and become aware of this true Self within me.
